4 Ways to Get Book Reviews on Amazon

Social proof is important, and reviews are one of the best ways to signal that readers are getting value from your book.

If you’ve only just launched your book, we recommend that you try to get 20 reviews on Amazon as quickly as possible. If you’ve already hit 20, then you should shoot for 100.

Here are a few ideas to help you get more book reviews.

1. Use Pubby or a Similar Platform

Pubby allows you to earn “snaps” by writing and submitting Amazon book reviews. Then, with the  “snaps” you’ve earned from reviewing other people’s books, you can ask other users to review your book.

This is an affordable way to get reviews, but the downside is that you can’t buy more snaps – the only way to get snaps is to review books.

This means that while it won’t cost you much to get reviews, the reviews might be a bit shallow. Plus, you’ll have to spend hours of your own time reviewing other people’s books.

2. Make an Offer, but Be Generous

One of the best ways to get reviews is to give out copies for free and then ask people to leave you an honest review.

Of course, success is all in your approach.

Some authors make the mistake of saying, “If you write a review, I’ll give you a copy of my book.” This doesn’t work as well as a more generous approach will.

Here are more effective ways to approach it:

  • Make the offer, then send a copy. “Interested in my book? I’d be happy to send a copy. If you like it, I’d appreciate it if you could leave an honest review on Amazon.” (Be sure to send a good link - more about that on #3.)

  • Send the copy, then ask for a review. “Here’s a PDF of my newest book. If you like it, please click this link to leave a review for it. Thanks!”

3. Send an Easy-to-Follow Link

One of the keys of excellent customer service is to anticipate your customer's needs before they even have to ask.

We can apply this same idea to getting book reviews by building in calls to action with simple instructions into the purchasing process!

If you want book reviews, instead of simply asking people to write one, send them an easy-to-follow link that takes them straight to a review form on your book page.

By saving people time like this, you’ll ensure more of them follow through with a review.

Type or copy https://www.amazon.com/review/create-review?&asin= for the URL, then add the 10-digit ISBN from your book to the end. This is now a direct link to review your book.

All the reader has to do is click, login, and leave the review!

4. Make Your eBook Free Through KDP

With KDP Select, you can make your ebook free for 5 days out of every 90 days.

This is a great way to build your author platform, get more reviews, and get more people talking about your book!

As part of this strategy, you could announce in advance the dates that your book will next be available for free, and then you could invite people to join your email list to get a reminder and a link to download the book on the day of the discount.

Then, you can easily follow up with them via email 30-90 days later with a reminder asking for a review (with your easy-follow link from tip #4).
