Becoming a Servant-Author: Re-framing Your Focus

Most people become nonfiction authors because they have a good idea that can help people.

Many more would-be authors hesitate to write because they don’t want to “brag” or give away “trade secrets.”

What mind-change needs to happen for an aspiring author to become an actual one?

Your desire to serve has to outweigh your ego.

The Consequence of Not Serving Your Audience

Between the late 1500s and the early 1600s, Peter Chamberlen invented the forceps - a tool used to deliver babies. It was a game-changer, but it was also kept secret for over a century.

The Chamberlen brothers (both surgeons, both named Peter) went to great pains to hide their secret. They carried the forceps in a large, ornate box for difficult deliveries. They ordered everyone else out of the room and blindfolded the mother before bringing the instrument out.

It was passed down through the generations - to another Peter, and his son, Hugh, all of whom kept it a secret.

For nearly 250 years, countless lives were saved by the Chamberlens through the use of forceps.

But in those same 250 years, countless lives were lost, because they chose to keep it a secret instead of sharing it with the medical community at large.

Imagine the lives they’d have saved if they spearheaded the design and implementation of forceps instead of keeping it to themselves!

Make It Your Goal to Serve

Will your book save the lives of countless mothers and infants? Probably not.

Focus on just one person.

If you can help one person, why would you want to withhold that from the world? And if your book can help one person, there are probably several more who need your book.

You owe it to them to write it.

Get started - and let people say what they will.
