Here’s Why You Have to Get Your Book Hook Right

Fishermen aren’t the only people who need a good hook; a hook is also the most important part of your book and one of the main determiners of how successful it will be.

What is a Book Hook?

A book hook (or elevator pitch) is a quick one or two-sentence description of your book that gets people to read it.

The term “book hook” came to us after reading a Hook Point by Brendan Kane. In it, he says: “If you can’t capture people’s attention in… whatever short time…  you have with them… you can’t get them to pay attention to the rest of your story, products, or services.”

Hook points apply as much to books as they do to any other principle - so be sure to pack a punch that makes people think, “I need to read this!”

Why You Need a Book Hook

Beyond the fact that book hooks get people to read your book, coming up with one early on will completely change the way you write the book, design the cover, and tell people about it. Your hook will have a direct impact on the audience you’re trying to attract (and can help you figure out what audience it is you want to attract)! 

Before you even finish writing your nonfiction book, you should focus on creating a strong book hook. Once you do, everything else will fall into place.
